ABOUT THE VCP

What is THE vcp?

The VCP is a one-of-a-kind program, found only at Texas A&M University, independent of any specific degree plan. The VCP fellowship and coaching certification program is offered to veterans who are enrolled at Texas A&M. Veterans and active duty service members who strive to be coaches and/or teachers after their military career are always being sought. We can help with the full transition process by mentoring each and every veteran. We help with job placement and can save years of a veteran’s life by providing a large support system and gateway into the Aggie Network.

our history

The VCP at Texas A&M University, founded in 2021 by Dr. John Thornton and Nate Young, has emerged as a transformative initiative aiding veterans, active service members, and their families—including dependents—in transitioning to higher education and professional careers.  Initially focused on guiding veterans into high school coaching roles, the VCP has expanded to support broader academic and professional aspirations, fostering a strong, trust-based community.  Currently, this program operates under the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management (KNSM).

"I know first-hand how the coaching shortage in the state of Texas is greatly affecting each of us and ultimately the student-athletes. What Nate is building here with the Veteran Coaching Program has the potential to greatly serve Texas schools and student-athletes, which is connecting high caliber veterans with leadership skills to high demand teaching, coaching, and mentorship positions for generations to come."
